Making Plant Beds affordable

When you do gardening  it is nice to have designated areas for your plants. Planting on the ground directly, you have to deal with weeds, soil erosion and walkways. I love gardening. But everything that it involves is expensive. I did some research and came across something called Square Foot Gardening. I even bought the book which I will give you the link below if you are interested. A way to grow in small spaces.

I loved the idea. You would make square foot sections out of wood and grow one item in that square. You would create as many as you desire and grow as many items you want . I followed the book  to get ideas and know how’s. But i realized that everything that i had to do was expensive. I was not going spend that much money as I didn’t know if I will keep up.

In the end I used my imagination and spent less to get similar results. One of the things I did was that I made vegetable beds my way. I got the wood that is used for fencing which was pretty cheap. I made the squares but then I had to buy the top soil which was also pricey. I continued for sometime and gave it  up as it was getting expensive.

This is what I did. Went to Home Depot and got the cheapest wood they had. The wood for fencing. Made the squares and worked like a magic.

The link below is for the kindle version of the book.

The fun of having your own garden

It is so inspirational to have your own vegetable, fruit or flower garden. Having fruits and vegetables from your own garden is the joyous meal that you will ever have. It is said that you have to eat a fruit or a vegetable that you grew, at least once in your lifetime.  The convenience of just plucking herbs and spices when you are ready to cook is amazing and it does not get more organic than that.

Gardening is not complicated. Everyone in some way desires to grow. Not knowing what to do and the money to spend makes it, not wanting to start. What if I told you that you could have a beautiful garden without spending any money at all.

Depending on where you live, almost anything could be grown throughout the year. There are various methods of growing that are so freely available on the internet. Seeds can be bought from gardening and hardware stores.

The fruit you buy can be your next thing to grow. If you want to grow tomatoes, you get the seeds from the tomatoes that you already have in the fridge. The specifics of how and what could be researched later. Use simple methods at the beginning and grow into it later.

If you happen to go somewhere hiking or walking and happen to see a plant that you like, just cut a piece of the plant and bring it home. Put it in a container of water and soke it until they grow roots. Then you are ready to grow it in a pot or in your garden.

In this example a piece of tree cut put in water until roots appear and then plant it in soil or in a pot. This is a great way to separate land or fence too.

These are Lychee that I ate. Simply put in in soil and already it a little tree. Before you know it you will be eating your own Lychees. Doesn’t that sound fun.

In this example, we changed the older plants with new ones, and it did not cost anything. Brought these stems from somewhere put it in water until roots appear. Then planted them here.

My point here is that it doesn't have to be expensive for your garden to look good. One may argue that it takes a lot of time. You take small steps and the joy it brings you will bring you will want to take big steps.

Also, your life changes and becomes interesting. Every day is a day to look forward to something. Not to mention your conversation with friends and your media posts. The time you spend, becomes productive time.  Self-satisfaction you get out of this is priceless. You become truly organic.

However, there are travel restrictions as to what plants are allowed to be brought. The ministry of agriculture websites usually has answers to that. If you live in Florida like me the Florida Ministry of agriculture will be able to answer what you are allowed to bring to the state.

Plants do require a lot of water specially during summer. During summer most states get lots of rain. Attention to that is important. There are different ways how to keep your plants hydrated. Will discuss that on a different blog.
